Seasonal Calendar
The orange season in Tenerife, and in Spain in general, is usually:
- Navel oranges: From November to March. These are some of the most popular oranges and are known for being seedless and having a sweet flavor.
- Late oranges: From March to June. These oranges are ideal for juicing due to their high juice content.
- Summer oranges: As the name suggests, they are harvested in summer, mainly in the months of July and August.
- Early varieties: These are harvested from October onwards, and are the first oranges to appear in the season.
It's important to note that these dates are approximate and may vary depending on the weather conditions each year and other factors. Furthermore, the variety of oranges grown and the exact timing of the season may differ slightly between different areas of Tenerife.
Selection tips
Some tips to help you choose the best oranges are:
- External appearance: Look for oranges with a smooth, shiny peel. Avoid those with spots, discoloration, or moldy areas.
- Texture: Gently press the orange with your fingers. It should feel firm but slightly springy. If it's too soft, it may be overripe or have rotten areas.
- Weight: A good orange is usually heavy for its size. This generally indicates that it's full of juice. If you're comparing two oranges of the same size, choose the heavier one.
- Scent: A fresh, ripe orange will give off a sweet citrus aroma. If it has no scent or a strange smell, it's best to avoid it.
- Shape: While a perfectly round shape isn't essential, avoid oddly shaped oranges or those with unusual bumps, as this could indicate irregular growth or some kind of disease.
- Peel: While a thin peel usually indicates more juice inside, a peel that's too thin can make the orange more susceptible to damage or disease. Aim for a balance.
- Avoid imperfections: While some surface blemishes or scars won't affect the flavor or quality inside, it's best to avoid oranges with deep cuts, sunken areas, or mold spots.
Conservation
Once you've selected your oranges, store them in a cool, dry place. If you don't plan to eat them within a week, consider refrigerating them to prolong their freshness.
