The corn: the golden heart of our land and your health
For us in Tenerife, the millo It's much more than an ingredient; it's living history in every pineapple and every handful of gofio. We invite you to discover why this "yellow treasure" should be a star on your eco-friendly table.
The Journey of the Mill: From Mesoamerica to the Canary Islands.
The origin of corn dates back some 10,000 years to Mexico, the result of the domestication of teosinte by the ancient inhabitants of Mesoamerica. For the Maya and Aztec civilizations, it was a sacred commodity known as "that which sustains life."
Millet arrived in the Canary Islands at the end of the 16th century, probably brought by the Portuguese (hence the term "millo," which comes from the Portuguese word "milho"). Since then, it has adapted perfectly to our climate, becoming a lifeline in times of scarcity and a staple of our diet.
